Globe Valve is a linear valve specifically designed to regulate flow (throttling) precisely. Unlike gate valves, globe valves have an internal cavity (Z-pattern) that causes higher flow resistance (pressure drop), but provides excellent control and tight sealing capabilities.
Globe Valve gets its name from its globe-shaped body. This valve uses a disc-shaped closing element that moves perpendicular to the seat to open or close flow. Because of its turning flow path design (Z-pattern or S-pattern), the globe valve creates higher flow resistance (pressure drop) compared to a gate valve.
However, this flow resistance actually provides a main advantage: very precise throttling capability. Globe valves can be partially opened without causing damage to the disc or seat, something that should not be done with gate valves. In addition, globe valves also provide very tight shutoff and are easier to operate (requiring less turning force on the handwheel).

The most common design with a Z-shaped flow path. Disc moves perpendicularly to the seat. Suitable for general throttling and shutoff applications in utility and water systems.

Stem is angled 45 degrees to the flow. Significantly reduces flow resistance (pressure drop) and facilitates the flow of solid/slurry fluids. Ideal for vertical pipes.

Inlet and outlet form a 90-degree angle. Serves a dual function as a valve and a pipe elbow. Reduces the number of fittings, ideal for high-pressure pulse applications and boiler blowdown.

Precision cone-shaped needle disc. Used to regulate very small, high-pressure flows. Commonly found in instrumentation systems, pressure gauges, and gas analyzers.

Uses a piston instead of a disc. Resistant to vibration and leakage. Often used for high-pressure steam fluids and thermal systems.

Combination of Globe Valve and Check Valve. Can be closed manually like a globe valve, but opens/closes automatically to prevent backflow. Mandatory in boiler drum systems per ASME.
Note: The pressure values above are the pressure ratings at ambient temperature (~38°C). Actual pressure ratings will decrease as operating temperature increases according to the ASME B16.34 curve. For throttling steam or hot fluids, Forged Steel Globe Valves (Class 800 to 4500) are the primary choice due to their very high thermal and mechanical resistance.
